The New Year brought me a general feeling of unrest relating to our business: a feeling that something needed to be done, something needed to change. I knew the business and I needed a proverbial kick up the bum but didn’t know where to start.

A flyer fell out of the latest copy of the Federation of Small Businesses magazine offering a free seminar with tips on how to grow your business so I booked in and waited.

The seminar was conducted by Paul and everything he said either made light bulbs go off in my head, touched a nerve or made me feel incredibly excited. He seemed an approachable, knowledgeable and, most importantly for me, a non-pushy, humble person and I immediately felt that he would be able to help me with the business.

In life we have someone to help us in all areas of our lives: you see a doctor if you feel ill, you go to the dentist if you have a tooth-ache, you hire a personal trainer if you want to lose weight but where do we go when we want help with running our business? Yes, there are hundreds of books out there which can help you, but what if you prefer the personal touch: someone to tailor all that advice to your business, someone to push you to do what they know you can but you don’t think you can? As a martial arts coach, I coach people in self defence and I know I make a big impact in their lives. I felt I needed someone who could do the same for me and my business. I wanted to learn how to grow my business –and a business coach was obviously the answer.

So, I signed up for the Strategic Planning Process (SPP), not really knowing what it was but with blind faith that it was going to be of benefit in some way. I think all I was expecting was a magic to-do list of quick fixes for the business. However, little did I know what a major impact it would have on me, my life and my attitude to the business.

Spending between 12 and 14 hours talking solidly about the business forces you to analyse your business, your role in it, your feelings about it (positive and negative) and your future, something I never took the time to do. Paul’s role was pivotal in providing a positive, encouraging and supportive environment, the shining light at the end of the tunnel which gradually became brighter and brighter. His optimism and excitement for MY business was infectious – if he was so positive how could I not be?

Part of the Strategic Planning Process involved the Flippen tool which assesses you as a person and your personality and traits and how they are helping or hindering your business. On analysis of my results, I think I now see myself as much as a work in progress as anything else in life –rather than as a fixed entity, warts and all, that everything else has to fit around. It has inspired a renewed excitement and determination for personal growth, with and independently of my business.

The impact of working with Paul on me personally has been huge. How it will impact on my business, time will tell –but as my attitude towards the business is infinitely more positive and determined, the business is destined for huge success because I will make it happen.

To give an analogy, before I worked with Paul, I was travelling on a road with no destination –I was travelling at a comfortable speed, the car was in good condition and running fine, but I did not know where I was going. As it was cloudy, I could not see where I was heading but comfortable all the same.

Using the same analogy, Paul has helped and encouraged me to work out where I want to go, what I want to see and do. We have looked at the mechanics of the car to ensure that it keeps working at optimum speed and efficiency (and how to get a better one!). The way ahead is clear, I can see where I am headed, the sky is clear and best of all, I have, in Paul, a passenger and navigator who is there to make sure I make it where I want to go, and to set me on the right road if I get lost or deviate.

Sometimes we are too scared or too proud to seek help in our lives. Be brave. It will change how you feel about your life, your business and your future.

The aim:

We first experienced Paul as an after dinner speaker, and intuitively recognized him as the business coach we had been seeking. We were inspired by his knowledge, experience and obvious passion for his chosen role.

- Following Pauls guidance, we were able to focus our energies and creativity into developing an action plan that will not only hit our first year cash flow needs, but will surpass them by 50%.

- The key to this was following the advice that Paul continuously emphasizes…we took MASSIVE ACTION!

- This has relieved us of an onerous burden, that was creating pressure and stress both in our business relationship and in our private lives.

The Flippen psychometric tool:

- If Paul played the role of ‘surgeon’ as our coach, his ‘scalpel’ was the Flippen Test! This was the tool he used to dissect our business plans... and our psyches.

- I have done many psychometric tests in business, but never come across a system that so accurately is able to lay bare both your strengths AND your constraints so clearly.

- Equally important was the systems ability, with Pauls guidance, to support you coming up with a series of  action plans that allow you to overcome these constraints and build upon your strengths.
